What Is Robotic Lung Surgery?

ROBOTIC LUNG SURGERY

Robotic lung surgery is a minimally invasive surgery that uses an intuitive robotic system for surgical assistance through video. By using this robotic system, a surgeon can achieve great surgical precision within the chest cavity including having an increased range of motion, improved dexterity and access, and enhanced visualization. This type of surgery is considered to be one of the most promising developments in lung cancer treatment. It is an alternative to open-chest operations.

This surgical treatment is offered to patients with early-stages of lung cancer. However, not everyone is a candidate for this surgery. Dr. Mikhail and his team will determine if you qualify for this operation.

CONDITIONS TREATED BY ROBOTIC LUNG SURGERY

Robotic lung surgery is used for a variety of different conditions, but this surgery is also patient dependent, and a doctor can determine if the surgery is possible based on the patient and his/her condition.

  • Esophageal cancer
  • Non-small cell lung cancer
  • Small cell lung cancer
  • Bronchogenic cysts
  • Esophageal duplication cysts
  • Mediastinal cysts
  • Thymus cysts
  • Lung nodules
  • Paraesophageal hernia repair

BENEFITS OF ROBOTIC LUNG SURGERY

There are several benefits of choosing robotic lung surgery as opposed to traditional open-chest surgery. Since there is no rib spreading, the patient will likely have a shorter hospital stay, less post-op pain, less tissue trauma, less discomfort, less blood loss, fewer transfusions, a faster return to normal activities, a reduced risk of infection, and less scarring.
